In an effort to avoid watching too many Christmas movies for an entire month, I have been selecting some movies that I might have never watched otherwise. I have new options with both PureFlix and UP Faith & Family streaming services. I have watched several movies regarding men and women from the Bible and they all have been interesting. One movie was called “Time Changer”, but it was not about a person from the Bible, but rather about changes in society over time.
It is a science fiction movie set in the year 1890, with discussions between Bible professors at Grace Bible Seminary. One of the professors (Dr. Carlisle) has written a book about morality that is scheduled to be published; however, both he and the publisher want the Seminary to endorse the work. The school protocol requires 100% agreement for any endorsement. One of the professors (Dr. Anderson) has a problem with the wording in part of the book because it teaches morality without Jesus as the standard for determining morality.
Dr. Anderson has a time machine that his late father had developed before he died but was never able to test time travel before he died. Dr. Anderson had tested it one time and was so surprised about what he learned that he insisted that Dr. Carlisle take a trip into the future before his book got published. He travels 100 years into the future to 1990. Dr. Carlisle is shocked by what he sees on the streets, in the stores, in movies, in schools, and even in church. Society had accepted as normal so many things that were sins and many things that were illegal had become legal.
Jesus and any discussion about religion had been removed from the classrooms and morality had become dependent upon one’s personal beliefs. There are multiple sub-plots that make the movie more interesting than described; however, Dr. Carlisle realizes during his few days in the future, how not stressing Jesus as the foundation for “right and wrong” is a mistake. When he returns to 1890, he tells Dr. Anderson that he now agrees with him about the changes needed for his book.
We get lulled into accepting small changes that don’t seem all that important when looking at a narrow window of time. Each new change uses a baseline of what was acceptable the day before rather than what the standard should have remained over the many years. Here are a few warnings we have been given by God about the future and changes. Those of us who were alive in 1950 have lived through all of the changes identified in the scriptures below.
Hebrews 13:8-9 King James Version
8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever. 9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
Matthew 24;24 King James Version
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
1 Timothy 4:1 King James Version
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Timothy 4:3-4 King James Version
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
2 Thessalonians 2:3 King James Version
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
2 Timothy 3 King James Version
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. 9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their’s also was. 10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, 11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
