The Rest of the Story

Average Joe – The Movie

If you have not watched the movie “Average Joe,” you should. The story about Joe Kennedy’s life is important to help us understand not only about him but also about us as individuals. More on that later because I want to discuss the “big picture” first. For more than fifty years, our country has been on a slippery slide that has taken us to places where many of us have all but given up fighting a losing cause. To those born in the last forty years, this may sound a bit out there; however, to those who were living in the ‘fifties to early ‘sixties, this will only be a review of years gone by.

Beginning in the mid-1960s, the US Congress and Federal Courts began making changes to laws and how existing laws were interpreted. The public was told the changes would make everything fairer for all citizens. Some of those changes were in response to riots and others to lawsuits. God was removed from schools first and then from most public places. Abortion became a “right” that was found hidden in an odd place in the Constitution. The government began giving lots of money to families not required to work and even more money if there was no husband in the family.

TV programs and movies presented positive views of smoking, drinking, and sexual activities that became normalized over time. Discipline became rare in schools, public places, and many homes. Government agencies lost their focus on what they were created for and became tools and bank accounts to fund activities that would never have been allowed in earlier years. Public prayers were prohibited, and many new doctrines were being taught in many churches that contradict what is found in the Bible.

During the past twenty-five years, many of us wondered if our country had slid so far down that slippery slope that maybe God had given up on America. It seemed like every day we would see another one of our rights disappear and more corruption accepted as normal business. Foul language is used by even small children and children being given drugs for everything. Nonsense is accepted as science that would have been considered as bad jokes in the past.

What the public was not following were individuals who were fighting behind the scenes for all of us. Just “average Joes” and small groups going up against governments and powerful groups to regain our rights that were guaranteed in the Constitution and by God. One of those “average Joes” is Joe Kennedy which the movie tells the story about. His struggles are important because they describe how he dealt with conflict and disappointments that did not make his life easier but helped him become the man he is today. It is a lesson to all of us, that God uses normal people, flaws and all, to accomplish big tasks that He wants done on His timeline.

We are beginning to see positive changes that began more than six years ago. In recent months, we have seen evidence that God has put His people in key positions. I believe this is the result of the millions who have been praying for God to turn this country back to Him. All He was waiting on was for Americans to get their heart back to worship Him and not the idols of the world.
