The Rest of the Story

Eva and Jones Hall

When I was going through some old papers looking for some documents that I needed after Eva’s passing, I came across the newspaper clipping I wanted to keep. It was from the last time Eva had sung at the Jones Hall with the UBA Choir, along with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, for Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. I forget how many years she was able to do that, but it was wonderful for me and my daughters to be there and see her as a part of something that she loved. She made many trips across town to practice with the UBA group, and it was such an honor. I have put that in a safe place and cannot find it now. So many memories just popping up like – do you remember this?

I believe the practice sessions started in late September and continued once a week until early December, when they went to twice a week. The practice sessions were held at South Main Baptist back then, with the final two practice sessions taking place in Jones Hall. The performance dates were in December, leading up to Christmas. I don’t remember the ticket prices, but the event was always a sellout. I remember Eva telling me how humbled she was to be part of that chorus each year. She told our daughters, if there is something special you want to do in life, you must be willing to put the effort required to do your best. Then you give the glory to God. God makes all of us unique and has a purpose for our lives. It is a true blessing when we discover our purpose and make the most of it.
