We know that God hates all sins; however, scriptures in the Bible do not treat all sins equally, and some are repeatedly warned against because they are especially dangerous to the soul and to society. The Bible highlights these sins as among the gravest:
- Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit– This is considered the unpardonable sin. Jesus said every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven, but not this one, because it involves persistently rejecting the Holy Spirit’s witness to Christ (Mark 3:29; Matthew 12:31-32)
Mark 3:28-29 New International Version 28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”
Matthew 12:31-32 New International Version 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. - Idolatry– Worshiping other gods or placing anything above God. The Ten Commandments begin with “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
Exodus 20:3 NIV. Idolatry corrupts the heart and replaces God with false objects of devotion . - Murder– Taking an innocent life is condemned in Exodus 20:13. It violates God’s design for life, dishonors Him, and disrupts communities.
Exodus 20:13 New International Version 13 “You shall not murder. - Adultery – Sexual infidelity is forbidden in Exodus 20:14. It breaks the sacred bond of marriage and is seen as a betrayal of trust.
Exodus 20:14 New International Version 14 “You shall not commit adultery. - Lying– Deception and false witness are strongly warned against in Proverbs 6 and Revelation 21:8. Even white lies or perjury are condemned.
Proverbs 6:16-19 New International Version 16 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Revelation 21:8 New International Version 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” - Child Sacrifice / Occult Practices – Deuteronomy 18:10-12 forbids child sacrifice, divination, sorcery, and consulting mediums. These practices are seen as detestable and spiritually dangerous.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 New International Version 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. - Innocent Blood– Shedding the blood of the innocent is a grave sin, as seen in biblical justice themes and prophetic warnings. Abortion is killing innocent blood. Proverbs 6:16-19
- Pride– Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride precedes destruction. Pride is seen as the root of many other sins and a rejection of humility.
- Sexual Immorality– Including fornication, adultery, and exploitation, condemned in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 for violating God’s design for the body.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20 New International Version 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. - Other Gods / False Worship– Worshiping carved images or false deities is forbidden in Exodus 20:4-5 and Deuteronomy 17:3, as it violates God’s covenant.
Exodus 20:4-5 New International Version 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
Deuteronomy 17:3 New International Version 3 and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky,
The Bible tells us that all sin separates us from God, but these sins are especially grave because they involve deliberate rejection of God’s truth. They harm others irreversibly, or they close the door to repentance. Scripture urges believers to guard against them through humility, reverence, and reliance on Christ.
