Maybe it is just me, but I look back at my life and I see many great memories of busy and happy times. I have so many reasons to be thankful for the blessings we had as a family. Before our wedding, we never had that discussion about what we wanted in life or set any goals. The truth is, we knew about each other, but we hardly knew each other. Some marriages failed within a few years under those circumstances.
If we had used a “dating matching app,” if there had been such a thing, we would have never had that first date. My work hours in the first few years would have been too much for many marriages to survive. Yet, somehow, we held it together. I do not remember discussing having children until we were in the process of building our first house, after our first anniversary.
From the very beginning, we said we would make decisions together regarding finances, purchases, and the family. There were periods when our conversations were about our children or, later, our grandchildren, and not so much about the two of us. Later in life, we talked about politics and places we had gone, or places we wanted to see, or things to do.
We both knew we had been blessed in our lives and enjoyed our years together, sometimes bragging a bit too much. I think Eva had felt from an early age that we were meant to be together. For me, it was much later in life when it became clearer to me that God was involved with the two of us getting married and the things we shared over the 58 years together.
I cannot guess how many times over the years we have said to each other, “I love you.”
I remember that last day we were together, and I wish I had said the words in this song to you that day –
“You’re My Best Friend.”
You placed gold on my finger
You brought love like I’ve never known
You gave life to our children
And to me a reason to go on.
You’re my bread when I’m hungry
You’re my shelter from troubled winds
You’re my anchor in life’s ocean
But most of all you’re my best friend.
When I need hope and inspiration
You’re always strong when I’m tired and weak
I could search this whole world over
You’ll still be everything that I need.
You’re my bread when I’m hungry
You’re my shelter from troubled winds
You’re my anchor in life’s ocean
But most of all you’re my best friend.
You’re my bread when I’m hungry
You’re my shelter from troubled winds
You’re my anchor in life’s ocean
But most of all you’re my best friend…
