The Rest of the Story

Love Letters

To those who have lost a spouse, regardless of how long it has been, I want you to write them a letter. In that letter, tell them what you would like to tell them if they could be with you for an hour today. If you have a computer, write it on the computer and save the file with a filename that you can easily find later. If you do not have a computer, then write it in the old-fashioned way and put it in an envelope with the name on it, then put it where you can find it later.

While some individuals are no longer in a state of grief, many of us still have thoughts or feelings we wish we could express to them. It might be a birthday, anniversary, or some other special day when you miss them just a little bit more, when you can stop and read what you have written to them. You might even want to add to what you have written. If it is on paper, add a P.S. like we did back when we wrote love letters.

If you have remarried, you might not want to create new problems by doing this. Also, if your marriage did not leave you with fond memories, you probably will want to avoid this as well.

I know I will be with Eva again in the future. My memories of our time we had together allow me to keep her close and at the same time keep the love alive to fill that otherwise void. Sometimes it is the lyrics to a song that I wish I had said to her, or my version of a song or a poem, something that you never told them.

It is not my intention to imply that somehow, they will be able to see these messages, because I do not have any reason to believe they do. To me, it is about how I feel while I am putting words on paper, sharing my thoughts of what I would love to tell her. What I do not do is write about the real tough times, the pain and suffering, and the wish I had done more or differently. I focus on the positives and know her pain is over. I can share with others about those tough times and what it took to get through them, but my letters to Eva are love letters that help me when I am feeling down.
