The Sam Houston High School that we attended first opened in September 1955. Due to overcrowding at Burbank and available classrooms at Sam Houston, mid-term students entering high-ninth grade were transferred to Sam Houston. Our sister, Joyce, was one of the ninth graders attending the first day of school that year. Joyce was part of the firsts at Sam, including the Houstonettes. Joyce graduated in January 1959.
I began my time at Sam Houston in September 1958 and graduated in June 1961. Joyce and I shared a semester at Sam and had mutual friends. Jo Ann began her time at Sam Houston in January 1961, and we had one semester together before I graduated in June. Jo Ann and I shared friends over our years. Many of our classmates also had siblings who attended Sam during those years. Jo Ann, Sandra, Florence, and several of their classmates had enough credits and were able to take some other classes to graduate a semester early, so they became 1963 Graduates instead of January 1964.
Jo Ann has said I dated all her friends, but I never got her any dates with my friends. I could say she always dated Lynn, but maybe I did not trust my friends – just joking. I am glad that we were close enough as brother and sister to have double-dated and that I got to share her experience of her Senior Prom and to be a part of that with her close friends.
Some unplanned things occurred that made that possible, but they say, “all things work for the good.” The first picture is JoAnn Ray, Lynn Miller, Sandra Mainord, and me. The second picture is of Florence Higginbotham and Gary Parnell. Notice how pretty the girls are!
A great time was had by all, at least I did.
