About 500 miles away in Midland, four children, all six years old and under, are living with their grandmother. Child Protective Services has been involved due to child abuse. The children were removed from their mother’s custody and temporarily placed with their grandmother.
As a Christian, I know God is omniscient (all-knowing), omnipotent (all-powerful), and omnipresent (present everywhere). So, I know He is more than just aware of what these children are experiencing, but I also know I can never see and understand anything the way God does.
In Huntsville, a young couple had hopes and dreams of a family with several children. The wife, the youngest of six kids, and her husband had learned the sad news of not being able to give birth to their own children. The couple has a large support group in their church, and the wife is a teacher and loves working with children. I am sure many hours in prayer have been offered up for this couple and for whatever the future holds.
On Monday night of this week, two CPS workers arrived at the couple’s home in Huntsville with the four children. They had flown out of the Midland Airport to Houston and then driven to Huntsville. The children are 3, 4, 5, and 6 years old, and the two youngest are non-verbal at this point. This young couple is what I call “everyday heroes” who live amongst us. They hope to adopt these children after the six-month waiting period.
They have many challenges in their everyday lives and will need to lean on family and friends and trust God. I may never understand why children are born into abusive circumstances, but I know how real that is and how terrifying it is. I also know that God begins preparing those He needs to step up to help those in need to protect and care for them.
Jennifer asked me to accompany Kaylee to this appointment since it was set for 4:00 p.m. in Huntsville and there could be delays. There were delays, and it was 6:00 p.m. before they arrived at the house. It was about 7:45 when we left to drive home. As I waited in the car, my mind wandered to how unexpected events had transformed our lives beyond anything we had ever anticipated. How it felt when God was not answering our prayers. I thought about the many events that Kaylee has been through that have prepared her with the understanding and spirit to help these children during challenging times.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
