Their grandparents were married for over 50 years, and their love for each other inspired the couple who wrote this song. When I heard them sing it, I thought about Eva and me. When I was younger, I did not know about that kind of feeling. It is not like that old pair of house shoes that you will not throw away.
God tells us in Genesis 2:24, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” When you have that kind of marriage that lasts over 50 years, and you lose your mate, it is like you have lost part of you. Every thought you had for those years and every decision you made involves your mate, and then she is not there. There were times I could not go or do something because of her illness; however, if she is not with me, there is no place I care to go.
This story and I don’t think this song is about depression, rather it is about sharing with others what “true love” is like. Depression is living your life and never experiencing these feelings.
