I watched a movie last night that touched my heart with a message about a problem that has been bothering me for several years. The movie is “Play the Flute” and I found it on the Pure Flix streaming channel. The story is about a Youth Pastor getting his start at a new church and working with a group of high schoolers who are not interested in that Jesus stuff.
This man has already been offered the position of Pastor at his present church, but he feels called to take the Youth Pastor at the other church for a while. Watching the interaction of the kids with the Youth Pastor and his wife brought back memories of my youth in a different time. It made me think about what my priorities were at that age and how much of my time I would allocate to the church thing. By that age, I had already been baptized and I had a membership I could use later in life. I knew “right” from “wrong” and I mostly chose right.
“Play the Flute” is a paraphrase of scriptures that you are either sharing the “good news” or you need to be listening to someone sharing the “good news”. I have shared my feelings about the corruption of our schools teaching the wrong message and that is a problem; however, the problem begins at home. Children need to be provided a foundation of faith early on and a church that is focused on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If parents do not teach them, the world will fill their minds with things that will only bring them problems.
If your teenager is involved with church activities, that is a good thing. Do they tell you about the fun they have, or do they also tell you about the emotions they feel when presented with greater knowledge about Jesus? As a parent, you will never stop hurting when your child is going through difficult events or even a grandchild. They do not always follow your example, but if you do not show your faith is very important to you, they will have no reason to listen to your words of correction.
I recommend the movie to anyone that have kids in their life or plans to have children in the future.
